ANS is committed to advancing, fostering, and promoting the development and application of nuclear sciences and technologies to benefit society.
Explore the many uses for nuclear science and its impact on energy, the environment, healthcare, food, and more.
Division Spotlight
Mathematics & Computation
Division members promote the advancement of mathematical and computational methods for solving problems arising in all disciplines encompassed by the Society. They place particular emphasis on numerical techniques for efficient computer applications to aid in the dissemination, integration, and proper use of computer codes, including preparation of computational benchmark and development of standards for computing practices, and to encourage the development on new computer codes and broaden their use.

Colin Judge: Testing structural materials in Idaho’s newest hot cell facility
Idaho National Laboratory’s newest facility—the Sample Preparation Laboratory (SPL)—sits across the road from the Hot Fuel Examination Facility (HFEF), which started operating in 1975. SPL will host the first new hot cells at INL’s Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) in 50 years, giving INL researchers and partners new flexibility to test the structural properties of irradiated materials fresh from the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) or from a partner’s facility.
Materials meant to withstand extreme conditions in fission or fusion power plants must be tested under similar conditions and pushed past their breaking points so performance and limitations can be understood and improved. Once irradiated, materials samples can be cut down to size in SPL and packaged for testing in other facilities at INL or other national laboratories, commercial labs, or universities. But they can also be subjected to extreme thermal or corrosive conditions and mechanical testing right in SPL, explains Colin Judge, who, as INL’s division director for nuclear materials performance, oversees SPL and other facilities at the MFC.
SPL won’t go “hot” until January 2026, but Judge spoke with NN staff writer Susan Gallier about its capabilities as his team was moving instruments into the new facility.
The Angelo F. Bisesti Scholarship was established in November 1994 for undergraduate students interested in nuclear power, preferably with a focus on new design and construction.
Angelo F. Bisesti (1942 - 1994) was born on Long Island and spent many years in car racing and other family experiences with his brothers in New York. He completed his bachelor’s degree program at San Francisco State University in Electrical Engineering and started his career with Ebasco and later with Stone & Webster in the design departments for early nuclear plants.
He joined Bechtel Power Corporation in 1971 and served as Lead Engineer for the Susquehanna BWR advanced control room development, testing installations and commissioning. Angelo then served as resident project manager for Unit 1, through fuel load. Susquehanna has been considered a model for the industry for construction, and had we continued building new plants, we would have followed the guidance and lessons learned in the Susquehanna construction program. In 1987, he joined Fluor Daniel as Senior Director of Power Marketing and was responsible for nuclear operating plant services and subsequently for advanced technology programs.
Angelo was best known for his abilities to lead technical programs in which everyone enjoyed participating. His personality brought out the best in everyone that came in contact with him, and his enthusiasm for quality and life was infectious.
Angelo was a member of the American Nuclear Society since 1986 and served as the Technical Program Chair for the 1991 ANS Winter Meeting Embedded Topical Meeting, “The Next Generation of Nuclear Plants - A Status Report,” which was sponsored by the ANS Power Division. It became of the highest attended Embedded Topical Meetings in ANS history. He also served on the ANS Power Division Program Committee and as a Session Organizer for many special sessions over the years. In 1993, Angelo was a candidate for the ANS Board of Directors and was appointed as the Vice Chair of the ANS Special Committee on New Construction by the Society president.
