Panelists discuss U.S. path to criticality in ANS webinar
The American Nuclear Society recently hosted a panel discussion featuring prominent figures from the nuclear sector who discussed the industry’s ongoing push for criticality.
Yasir Arafat, chief technical officer of Aalo Atomics; Jordan Bramble, CEO of Antares Nuclear; and Rita Baranwal, chief nuclear officer of Radiant Industries, participated in the discussion and covered their recent progress in the Department of Energy’s Reactor Pilot Program. Nader Satvat, director of nuclear systems design at Kairos Power, gave an update on the company’s ongoing demonstration projects taking place outside of the landscape of DOE authorization.

In Switzerland, two types of repositories are currently foreseen, one for low- and intermediate-level waste (L/ILW) and one for spent fuel, vitrified high-level waste and optionally long-lived ILW (SF/HLW/ILW). Repository implementation involves a stepwise process that takes several decades and a comprehensive planning base for the scientific and engineering work is therefore needed, which is presented in the RD&D (research, development and demonstration) plan. The main objective of the recently published RD&D Plan is to establish the purpose, scope, nature and timing of various future RD&D activities, based on the different requirements and planning assumptions, with a focus on the next 5 to 10 years, in anticipation of the submission of the general licence foreseen in 2024
