The use of a gamma-ray densitometer for obtaining precise measurements of local density in an axially symmetric two-phase flow or of mean density in a plane parallel to (or through) the centerline is described. The method has been applied to cavitating mercury in a venturi. The resultant density measurements allow a precise description of the flow regime.
