NNSA furloughs 1,400 employees, pays contractors until end of month
After nearly three weeks of a government shutdown, the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration has furloughed 1,400 employees and has retained 400 as essential employees who will continue working without pay.

The need for professional action to provide public information by each American Nuclear Society (ANS) member is based on our current domestic and international energy-related problems. Selected history of public information since the founding of the ANS through to its current activities provides a focus for future communication needs. Future efforts must be concentrated on key legislative groups, mass media, labor organizations, and local citizenry to convey an objective, well-rounded understanding of the benefits and risks of nuclear power.
