A variational principle is applied to develop a method for constructing approximate solutions to the three dimensional, few group diffusion equations using only the solutions of one and two dimensional problems. Three additional related methods are described and a numerical example presented which is representative of several that have been studied. It is found that the new methods give considerably improved results compared with the conventional synthesis method.
