Nuclear Criticality Safety
NCSD provides communication among nuclear criticality safety professionals through the development of standards, the evolution of training methods and materials, the presentation of technical data and procedures, and the creation of specialty publications. In these ways, the division furthers the exchange of technical information on nuclear criticality safety with the ultimate goal of promoting the safe handling of fissionable materials outside reactors.

DOE-EM awards $37.5M to Vanderbilt University for nuclear cleanup support
The Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management announced on January 16 that it has awarded a noncompetitive financial assistance agreement worth $37.5 million to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., to aid the department’s mission of cleaning up legacy nuclear waste.

Half-lives of twenty-one radionuclides are reported. In general, the activity of a purified sample was followed for two or more half-lives. The data were analyzed by “least squares,” using desk calculators or computers. Two half-life values reported previously have been redetermined, with improvement.
