Design, procurement, fabrication, and performance testing of control rod materials for the EBWR are reviewed. Construction of the EBWR afforded an opportunity to reduce control rod costs by using a newly developed stainless steel alloy containing high concentrations of natural boron. Costs and performance (to date) of these rods are compared with hafnium-Zircaloy 2 rods.
