The mission of the Decommissioning and Environmental Sciences (DES) Division is to promote the development and use of those skills and technologies associated with the use of nuclear energy and the optimal management and stewardship of the environment, sustainable development, decommissioning, remediation, reutilization, and long-term surveillance and maintenance of nuclear-related installations, and sites. The target audience for this effort is the membership of the Division, the Society, and the public at large.

How to talk about nuclear
In your career as a professional in the nuclear community, chances are you will, at some point, be asked (or volunteer) to talk to at least one layperson about the technology you know and love. You might even be asked to present to a whole group of nonnuclear folks, perhaps as a pitch to some company tangential to your company’s business. So, without further ado, let me give you some pointers on the best way to approach this important and surprisingly complicated task.

Measurements of the 238U:235U fission cross section ratio were carried out in the 2 to 3 MeV region using two different methods to determine the relative masses. The energy dependence of the ratio was measured from 1 to 5 MeV and normalized to the results at 2.5 MeV. The measured value of the ratio at 2.5 MeV is 0.432 ± 0.004.
