Swiss nuclear power and the case for long-term operation
Designed for 40 years but built to last far longer, Switzerland’s nuclear power plants have all entered long-term operation. Yet age alone says little about safety or performance. Through continuous upgrades, strict regulatory oversight, and extensive aging management, the country’s reactors are being prepared for decades of continued operation, in line with international practice.

Neutron capture by a tantalum sample was measured at the Oak Ridge Electron Linear Accelerator pulsed neutron time-of-flight facility on a 40-m flight path. Average cross sections for 181Ta(n,γ) in the energy range from 2.6 to 1900 keV were derived. The partially resolved region from 2620 to 4000 eV was fitted in terms of resonance parameters by least-squares adjustment.
