Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) in Wilmington, N.C., has appointed Kelli Davis its first Nuclear Technology program director. Davis has nearly 20 years of experience in nuclear power, including roles in chemistry, operations, and environmental supervision.

The program: CFCC offers a nuclear technology degree. Students in the program can become reactor field technicians who are qualified for jobs with licensed nuclear reactor facilities. The program includes a work-based component at a nuclear facility where students can learn in a real-world setting.

The classes: Courses of study offered in the Nuclear Technology program are an A.A.S. in nuclear technology; the nuclear technology CCP pathway, for high school students; and a nuclear technology certificate.

The jobs: According to CFCC, graduates typically find employment in entry-level positions with nuclear plant maintenance contractors or electric utilities. Other opportunities include transferring to a four-year bachelor of science program or the nuclear navy (submarines and aircraft carriers).
