DOE-EM issues $15.5 million funding opportunity for minority-serving institutions

The Department of Energy has released a notice of a funding opportunity (DE-FOA-0003422) for the department’s Office of Environmental Management Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP). With an estimated value of $15.5 million, the funding opportunity is a set-aside for minority-serving institutions (MSIs) and will result in multiple financial assistance awards ranging from one year to three years in length.

The DOE-EM MSIPP provides students and graduates of MSIs with hands-on education and experience by supporting collaborations between such institutions and DOE national laboratories. According to the U.S. Department of Education, MSIs are institutions in which one minority group constitutes at least 25 percent of total undergraduate enrollment or in which all minority students constitute at least 50 percent of the total undergraduate enrollment.

The awards: Awards resulting from the funding opportunity will focus on enhancing programs at MSIs to help foster a sustainable and diverse DOE-EM workforce science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) pipeline.

According to DOE-EM, through technology curriculum, professional development, and shared interest research, the office will promote the development of a nationally engaged scientific and engineering workforce to conduct basic research that will lead to future career pathways in the DOE-EM complex for underrepresented groups.
