The American Nuclear Society is excited to announce the launch of its inaugural Nuclear 101 certificate course, scheduled to take place in-person at the 2024 ANS Winter Conference and Expo this November. This comprehensive five-day program is designed to provide participants with a robust understanding of nuclear energy and engineering, delivered by some of the field's foremost experts.

Nuclear 101 is tailored for a diverse audience, including new professionals in the nuclear industry, executives, managers, and industry veterans. Individuals transitioning from other sectors or those beginning their careers in nuclear energy will find the course invaluable for quickly gaining foundational knowledge. For leaders seeking to enhance their understanding of nuclear technology to better inform their strategic decisions, this course offers essential insights. Current nuclear professionals without a technical background can deepen their knowledge and enhance their career prospects through this program. In addition, organizations can use this course to augment their training and onboarding programs, ensuring employees receive top-tier education from leading instructors—Walid Metwally, Mary Lou Dunzik-Gougar, Sunil Chirayath, Mark Schanfein, and Steven Arndt.

Subject matter: The program’s 32 hours of hands-on learning will immerse attendees in the world of nuclear and will cover a wide range of topics, including the history and legacy of nuclear energy, nuclear fundamentals, the nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear reactors and power generation, licensing and regulatory concepts, radiation detection and measurement, health physics and radiation safety, nonpower applications of nuclear energy, nuclear safety culture, and industry codes and standards. The course also offers elective modules on specialized topics such as nuclear non-proliferation, decommissioning, advanced reactor technologies, simulation tools in the nuclear industry, storage, transportation, disposal of radioactive material, and careers in the nuclear field. Attendees who pass the final exam will receive the ANS Nuclear 101 course certificate, distinguishing them as knowledgeable professionals in the field of nuclear energy.

Location: Nuclear 101 is being held in conjunction with the 2024 ANS Winter Meeting and Expo, happening November 17–21 in Orlando, Fla. This will provide access to numerous networking opportunities, including the President’s Opening Reception, ANS Party, and various other networking meals and breaks, where participants can connect with industry leaders and peers and foster valuable professional relationships.

The course schedule includes the President's Opening Reception on Sunday, November 17, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. (ET). Classes will run from Monday, November 18, to Thursday, November 21, with full days of sessions and breaks for meals and networking. The course concludes on Friday, November 22, with morning classes ending at noon.
