Las Vegas, Nev. — The American Nuclear Society (ANS) issued the following statement during the 2024 ANS Annual Conference in Las Vegas:

“The American Nuclear Society applauds the Group of Seven (G7) leaders’ Apulia communiqué in its call for continued international cooperation in strengthening, expanding, and diversifying civil nuclear supply chains as the world deploys advanced reactors.

Recognizing the pivotal role of zero-carbon nuclear energy in mitigating climate change and strengthening global energy security, the G7 has pledged to advance research and development in innovative technologies for advanced and small modular reactors—as well as fusion—while reducing dependence on civil nuclear supplies from Russia.

We commend the G7 leaders for their strong encouragement of international partnerships to make critical minerals and raw materials supply chains more diversified, transparent, resilient, responsible, circular, resource-efficient, and sustainable. The G7’s goals include increasing investment in and supporting local value creation in critical minerals supply chains—such as boosting the supply of high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel for powering tomorrow’s reactors. These efforts will accelerate a cleaner energy transition towards a more prosperous, peaceful, and sustainable world.

We believe that the G7’s commitment to Atoms for Peace multilateralism is key to upholding the International Atomic Energy Agency’s stringent nuclear safety and security standards, which are overwhelmingly endorsed by the scientific community. This universally agreed-upon approach is essential for a strong nonproliferation framework.”
