Pollster Scott Rasmussen reports that 53 percent of American voters support the construction of new nuclear power plants in the United States, while 31 percent oppose new plants. He further reports that 21 percent strongly favor and 14 percent strongly oppose new nuclear facilities.

Poll design: Rasmussen’s RMG Research conducted an online survey of 1,200 registered voters on May 10 and May 11. The survey sample was designed to accurately reflect the geographic, gender, age, education, Internet-usage, and political-party characteristics of the population of U.S. registered voters. The sampling error of the survey was +/–2.8 percent.

Other findings: Additional findings of the Rasmussen poll indicate that 49 percent of American voters believe that it would be possible for nuclear power to generate all of the energy needs of the United States. Eighteen percent believe that it would not be possible, and 33 percent are not sure. A total of 57 percent of respondents believe it is very important to reduce or eliminate U.S. reliance on foreign sources of energy.
