The Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management announced on January 16 that it has awarded a noncompetitive financial assistance agreement worth $37.5 million to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., to aid the department’s mission of cleaning up legacy nuclear waste.

The agreement (No. DE-EM0005321) was awarded under the Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation (CRESP), which supports DOE-EM in improving the scientific and technical bases for environmental management decisions.

According to DOE-EM, Vanderbilt will team with several other U.S. institutes of higher education to aid in the advancement of cost-effective, risk-informed environmental cleanup resulting from nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear energy research. CRESP will conduct strategic assessments, independent peer reviews, research, and education in support of environmental cleanup objectives.

The agreement has a performance period of five years, from January 16, 2025, through January 15, 2030.
