Nuclear Nonproliferation Policy
The mission of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Policy Division (NNPD) is to promote the peaceful use of nuclear technology while simultaneously preventing the diversion and misuse of nuclear material and technology through appropriate safeguards and security, and promotion of nuclear nonproliferation policies. To achieve this mission, the objectives of the NNPD are to: Promote policy that discourages the proliferation of nuclear technology and material to inappropriate entities. Provide information to ANS members, the technical community at large, opinion leaders, and decision makers to improve their understanding of nuclear nonproliferation issues. Become a recognized technical resource on nuclear nonproliferation, safeguards, and security issues. Serve as the integration and coordination body for nuclear nonproliferation activities for the ANS. Work cooperatively with other ANS divisions to achieve these objective nonproliferation policies.

X-energy, Dow apply to build an advanced reactor project in Texas
Dow and X-energy announced today that they have submitted a construction permit application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a proposed advanced nuclear project in Seadrift, Texas. The project could begin construction later this decade, but only if Dow confirms “the ability to deliver the project while achieving its financial return targets.”

Dr. Sharlissa Moore is an environmental justice advisor who works with the environmental justice and stakeholder engagement team in the risk and environmental assessment group in the earth systems science division at PNNL. She is the work package manager for PNNL’s Social Science and Environmental Justice consent-based siting work package. She joined PNNL in January 2022 after being an associate professor at Michigan State University in international energy policy between the public policy and engineering colleges. Her research focuses on energy justice, public perceptions, and social dynamics related to energy transitions. Her previous research projects included stakeholder conflict over renewable energy siting, the feasibility of solar pollinator habitat and agrivoltaics, deployment of behind-the-meter, solar power, transnational grid integration, public perceptions of Generation IV nuclear power, and factors affecting consumer adoption of residential battery storage. Additionally, she published a 2019 book on Morocco’s renewable energy transition and renewable energy cooperation between North Africa and the European Union. Sharlissa is an interdisciplinary social scientist and holds a PhD and MS in human and social dimensions of science and technology from Arizona State University and a BA in astronomy from Smith College.
