Proposed FY 2027 DOE, NRC budgets ask for less
The White House is requesting $1.5 billion for the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy in the fiscal year 2027 budget proposal, about 9 percent less than the previous year.
The request from the Trump administration is one of several associated with nuclear energy in the proposal, which was released Friday. Congress still must review and vote on the budget.

Dr Jones is an alumni of the UK’s Open University graduating with a BA in Engineering Science in 1992, BSc Hons in Materials Engineering in 1994 and a PhD in welding and materials engineering in 2003. Dr Jones began his career as a welding specialist apprentice within the Rolls-Royce power division in 1980 and has continued to pursue his passion for joining and materials science over the past 40years, where he has held positions across several high-value manufacturing and academic organisations that encompass aerospace, automotive, nuclear, marine and academia. In 2017 he became the Nuclear AMRC’s Chief Technology Officer and holds the position of Professor of Welding Technologies within the University of Sheffield, having been previously been Rolls-Royce’s Global Engineering Specialist for Joining science between 2005 and 2015 and Coventry University’s Professor of Joining and advanced engineering between 2015 and 2017. Dr Jones is responsible for developing and setting the Nuclear AMRC’s overall technology strategy and leads on the advancement of applied engineering and manufacturing practices into the UK’s fission and fusion power communities in addition to the UK’s NDA on behalf of the Nuclear AMRC. He also leads the High-Value Manufacturing Catapult’s Joining science strategy and is a Fellow of the Welding Institute, a UK delegated expert within the International Institute of Welding (IIW), a UK Committee representative for ASME BPVC Section IX and an active member of the UK’s RCC-M working group. His passion for continuing to develop and educate welding and materials engineers of the future is born out of his continuing support for the Welding Institute’s professional member community and regional branch activities, where he continues to mentor and provide financial recognition for outstanding commitment to individual’s career growth.
