ANS is committed to advancing, fostering, and promoting the development and application of nuclear sciences and technologies to benefit society.
Explore the many uses for nuclear science and its impact on energy, the environment, healthcare, food, and more.
Division Spotlight
Decommissioning & Environmental Sciences
The mission of the Decommissioning and Environmental Sciences (DES) Division is to promote the development and use of those skills and technologies associated with the use of nuclear energy and the optimal management and stewardship of the environment, sustainable development, decommissioning, remediation, reutilization, and long-term surveillance and maintenance of nuclear-related installations, and sites. The target audience for this effort is the membership of the Division, the Society, and the public at large.

NRC engineers share their expertise at the University of Puerto Rico
Robert Roche-Rivera and Marcos Rolón-Acevedo are licensed professional engineers who work at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. They are also alumni of the University of Puerto Rico–Mayagüez (UPRM) and have been sharing their knowledge and experience with students at their alma mater since last year, serving as adjunct professors in the university’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. During the 2023–2024 school year, they each taught two courses: Fundamentals of Nuclear Science and Engineering, and Nuclear Power Plant Engineering.
Educational Session|Panel|Sponsored by Plant Reliability
Tuesday, August 6, 2024|10:30AM–12:00PM EDT
The increasing trend in extreme weather events disrupting the electric grid has resulted in environmental resiliency becoming a focal point for energy providers and regulatory agencies. To this effect, INPO recently release a principles document, INPO 24-003 (Resiliency – Strengthening Defenses Against External Forces) and a Tier 2 guidance document specifically associated with assessing climate vulnerabilities, INPO 24-002 (Climate Vulnerability Assessment). This session will provide perspective on these INPO documents and discuss next steps for utilities to ensure environmental resiliency. The session will also address a specific challenge one utility is facing due to the changes in the local environment, which is directly affecting the supply of cooling water to the station. Finally, the session will discuss challenges in the management of the seasonal readiness process and potential impacts on plant reliability.
