The U.S. Geological Survey TRIGA® Reactor (GSTR) is a low–enriched uranium–fueled, pool–type reactor located at the Denver Federal Center in Lakewood, CO, only 5 miles from the Colorado School of Mines campus. Mines faculty and researchers maintain a research relationship with the reactor facility through the university's Nuclear Science and Engineering Center. The mission of the TRIGA® is to support USGS science by providing information on geologic, plant, and animal specimens to advance methods and techniques unique to nuclear reactors.

Restrictions:

 All participants age 18 or older must have government issued ID; if they are not citizens, then they must have a current passport. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE AN ‘APP’ AS VALID ID. YOU WILL NOT BE PERMITTED ONTO THE DENVER FEDERAL CENTER. BRING YOUR ACTUAL PHYSICAL ID. ALSO, MAKE SURE YOUR ID IS NOT MARKED ‘NOT VALID FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION’ OR SOMETHING SIMILAR. AZ RESIDENTS HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE IN THE PAST.

  • Everyone must wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.
  • Photography is strictly controlled, and permission must be obtained from a reactor staff member before taking any specific picture.
  • Food, drink, bags, briefcases, and other such containers must be left in the facility reception area.
  • No additional participants may be added the day of the tour and will be turned away.
  • A brief vehicle search may be required. As a note, weapons or drugs (including alcohol/marijuana) are strictly forbidden on the Federal Center campus at all times, including in vehicles.
