ANS is committed to advancing, fostering, and promoting the development and application of nuclear sciences and technologies to benefit society.
Explore the many uses for nuclear science and its impact on energy, the environment, healthcare, food, and more.
Division Spotlight
Nuclear Criticality Safety
NCSD provides communication among nuclear criticality safety professionals through the development of standards, the evolution of training methods and materials, the presentation of technical data and procedures, and the creation of specialty publications. In these ways, the division furthers the exchange of technical information on nuclear criticality safety with the ultimate goal of promoting the safe handling of fissionable materials outside reactors.

El Salvador: Looking to nuclear
In 2022, El Salvador’s leadership decided to expand its modest, mostly hydro- and geothermal-based electricity system, which is supported by expensive imported natural gas and diesel generation. They chose to use advanced nuclear reactors, preferably fueled by thorium-based fuels, to power their civilian efforts. The choice of thorium was made to inform the world that the reactor program was for civilian purposes only, and so they chose a fuel that was plentiful, easy to source and work with, and not a proliferation risk.
Executive Session|Panel
Wednesday, June 14, 2023|1:00–2:45PM EDT|Marriott 7/8
This panel will discuss the current applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in nuclear power. The panelists will provide insights from academia, national labs, AI-specific vendors, and utilities, highlighting the collaborative process required to mature AL applications for commercial use. Attendees will understand how each sector contributes to the development and application of AI/ML in nuclear energy. The panel will also discuss successful case studies and AI’s future in atomic energy.
Join us as we explore the state of the art in nuclear AI, discuss successful case studies, and envision the future of artificial intelligence in the world of atomic energy.
