Nuclear Criticality Safety
NCSD provides communication among nuclear criticality safety professionals through the development of standards, the evolution of training methods and materials, the presentation of technical data and procedures, and the creation of specialty publications. In these ways, the division furthers the exchange of technical information on nuclear criticality safety with the ultimate goal of promoting the safe handling of fissionable materials outside reactors.

Japanese researchers test detection devices at West Valley
Two research scientists from Japan’s Kyoto University and Kochi University of Technology visited the West Valley Demonstration Project in western New York state earlier this fall to test their novel radiation detectors, the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management announced on November 19.

This workshop will be focused on various aspects of the design and implementation process of Digital I&C systems for nuclear facilities, including HFE specific considerations. An array of experts from across the nuclear industry will provide presentations covering 1) lessons learned from utilities, vendors, and regulators working through the design, qualification, licensing, and implementation of Digital I&C upgrades within the current fleet of nuclear reactors, 2) recent research and focus areas from national and international organizations as it relates to Digital I&C, such as the potential applications for artificial intelligence, and 3) an overview of the future landscape as it relates to advanced reactor designs. This workshop is designed for entry-level as well as senior technical and management personnel in utilities, vendors, government, national labs, and universities.
