NS Savannah open house for National Maritime Day
On Sunday, May 17, in Baltimore, Md., there will be an open house on the NS Savannah to commemorate National Maritime Day. The Savannah acted as a passenger and cargo ship from 1962 to 1970, serving as a floating ambassador for President Eisenhower’s Atoms for Peace program and, more broadly, for the safe and peaceful uses of nuclear power.

The design of an experiment for determining the kinetic rate of the tritium oxidation reaction when tritium atoms are present is described. Determination of the reaction rate will be done by analyzing the ratio of T2 and T2O product as a function of time, temperature, tritium concentration, and oxygen concentrations. A model of a proposed surface reaction is given.
